The Central Florida Clean Cities Coalition LogoSponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Clean Cities program is designed to advance the nation's economic, environmental, and energy security by supporting practices to reduce petroleum consumption. Clean Cities coalitions promote alternative fuels and vehicles, fuel blends, fuel economy, hybrid vehicles, and idle reduction programs.

Clean Cities coalitions encourage the use of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) and their supporting infrastructure. By encouraging AFV use, the Clean Cities program assists the nation and the state in achieving energy security and environmental quality goals. The Clean Cities Program takes a unique, voluntary approach to AFV development by working with coalitions of local stakeholders and supporting local practices. The program purpose is to help develop the AFV industry and integrate this development into larger planning processes.

TheCentral Florida Clean Cities Coalition is a Florida chapter of the U.S. DOE Clean Cities Program and has been designated as the 75th member of the program. (See Designation Ceremony for details.) It is administered by the Florida Solar Energy Center and is a locally-based government-industry partnership encompassing a nine-county area of Brevard, Indian River, Lake, Osceola, Okeechobee, Orange, Seminole, St. Lucie and Volusia in east central Florida. The members forming the Coalition are designed as its stakeholders (see stakeholders for the membership names and organizations).

The Space Coast Coalition is a voluntary, locally based partnership in which anyone can join. Details on joining the Space Coast Coalition are given at How to Join. The Coalition has a formal four level organization and governing body. For organizational details see Coalition Structure.

As a result of the FSEC's Clean Cities program, two documents have been written on alternative fuel transportation in Florida. (See Documents on AFV in Florida for details.)
